Final Grades
Introduction
Final grades show the calculated overall grades for each pupil, divided by semester and school year. They are automatically calculated from the entered individual grades, taking weightings into account.
Final Grades in the Grade Table
In the grade overview of a lesson, you will find the final grades on the right side of the table:
Final Grade Columns
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| 1st Sem | Final grade for the first semester |
| Full Year | Final grade for the entire school year |
Values in the Columns
Each final grade column contains two values:
| Value | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Average | Avg | The calculated weighted average of all grades |
| Final Grade | = | The rounded final grade (whole number) |
Example:
- Avg 2.15 = 2 means: The average is 2.15, which rounds to a final grade of 2.
Calculating Final Grades
The final grade is calculated as follows:
- Collect Individual Grades: All grades in the grading period are collected.
- Apply Weighting: Each grade is multiplied by its weighting factor.
- Calculate Average: The sum of weighted grades is divided by the sum of weightings.
- Round: The average is rounded to the final grade.
Example Calculation
| Exam | Grade | Weighting | Weighted Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam 1 | 2 | 2.00 | 4.00 |
| Exam 2 | 3 | 2.00 | 6.00 |
| Quiz 1 | 1 | 1.00 | 1.00 |
| Oral | 2 | 1.00 | 2.00 |
| Total | 6.00 | 13.00 |
Average: 13.00 / 6.00 = 2.17
Final Grade: 2
Grading Periods
Final grades are calculated for different periods:
| Period | Description |
|---|---|
| 1st Sem (1st Semester) | Grades from the start of the school year to the end of the 1st semester |
| Full Year (School Year) | All grades of the entire school year |
The exact date boundaries of grading periods are configured by the school administration. For more information, see Grading Periods Configuration.
Final Grades in Composite Subjects
For lessons that are part of a composite subject, final grades are assigned in the composite subject:
This lesson is part of a composite subject. Final grades are therefore assigned in the composite subject.
Click "Open Composite Subject" to view the final grades in the composite subject.
For more information, see Composite Subjects.
Grade Publication
When Are Grades Visible to Pupils?
The visibility of grades for pupils and legal guardians depends on several factors:
- Grade Viewing Enabled: The school administration must have enabled grade viewing.
- Publication Date Reached: The publication date set for the exam must have been reached.
- Delay Observed: Any configured default delay is taken into account.
Default Delay
The school administration can set a default delay for grade publication. This delay is automatically applied to new exams.
For more information, see General Settings Configuration.
Lock Final Grades
Final grades can be locked to protect them from further changes. This is particularly useful at the end of a grading period after the grades conference and in preparation for export.
Locked vs. Unlocked Final Grades
In the grade table, you can identify the status of a final grade by its display:
| Display | Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Green background with number (e.g., 2) | Locked | The final grade is locked |
| "= X" format (e.g., = 3) | Not locked | The final grade is automatically calculated |
Lock Individual Final Grade
To lock an individual final grade for a pupil:
- Click on the desired final grade in the table (e.g., in the "1st Sem" column).
- A dialog opens with the grade details.
- Click "Lock Final Grade".
The dialog shows the following information:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Calculated Average Grade | The current weighted average |
| Rounded Grade | The final grade that will be locked |
| Locked? | Current status (Yes/No) |
| Created On | Time of creation |
| Last Updated On | Time of last change |
Lock All Final Grades of a Lesson
To lock all final grades of a lesson at once:
- Open the grade overview of the lesson.
- Click the lock icon next to the "Final Grades" heading.
- Select the Final Grade Type:
- Full Year: Lock all year-end grades
- Grading Period: Lock final grades of a specific period
- If you select "Grading Period", also select the desired period (e.g., "1st Sem").
- Click "Lock Final Grades".
When locking all final grades, only final grades that have not yet been locked are locked. Already locked final grades remain unchanged.
Reset Locked Final Grade
To unlock a locked final grade:
- Click on the locked final grade (green background).
- Click "More".
- Select "Reset Locked Final Grade".
After resetting, the final grade will be automatically calculated from the individual grades again.
After resetting, the final grade may change if individual grades were added or changed in the meantime.
Edit Locked Final Grade
Locked final grades can also be manually adjusted if needed:
- Click on the locked final grade.
- Click "Edit".
- Change the final grade as needed.
- Click "Save".
A manually changed locked final grade may differ from the calculated average. This can be useful for pedagogical rounding decisions.
Edit Final Grades
Unlocked final grades are automatically calculated and cannot be directly edited. To change the final grade, you must adjust the underlying individual grades.
Ways to influence the final grade:
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Change Grade | Changes the average |
| Delete Grade | Removes the grade from the calculation |
| Change Weighting | Changes the influence of the grade on the average |
| Add New Exam | Adds more grades to the calculation |
Missing Grades
If no grades have been entered for a pupil, no final grade is displayed. The cell remains empty.
For partially available grades, the final grade is calculated only from the available grades. Missing exams are not considered.
Practical Tips
Check Interim Results
Regularly check the calculated averages to respond early to performance issues.
Consider Weightings
When creating exams, pay attention to the correct weighting, as it directly affects the final grade.
Documentation
If there are questions about final grades, you can always trace the individual grades and their weightings in the grade table.
