Manage Grade Areas

Introduction

Grade areas define the categories in which grades are recorded. Each grade area has a weighting that is factored into the calculation of the overall grade. Typical grade areas are:

  • Major Assessment (e.g., written exams, tests) - higher weighting
  • Minor Assessment (e.g., pop quizzes, short tests) - lower weighting
  • Oral Grade - class participation

Understanding Weighting

The weighting determines how much grades from this area contribute to the overall grade.

Example:

Grade AreaWeightingGrade
Major Assessment2.02
Minor Assessment1.03

Calculation:

  • Major Assessment: 2 × 2.0 = 4.0
  • Minor Assessment: 3 × 1.0 = 3.0
  • Total Weighting: 2.0 + 1.0 = 3.0
  • Average: (4.0 + 3.0) / 3.0 = 2.33

For a typical school, we recommend the following grade areas:

NameWeightingDescription
Major Assessment2.00Written exams, tests, major assignments
Minor Assessment1.00Pop quizzes, short tests, homework
Oral Grade1.00Participation, oral examinations
Practical Grade1.00Practical work (e.g., in PE, Art, Music)
Note

Weighting may vary by federal state, school type, and subject. Please check the applicable regulations of your federal state.

Grade Areas per Year Group

You can flexibly assign grade areas to different year groups. This allows you to define different assessment schemes for different class levels.

Example:

  • Year groups 5-10: Major Assessment, Minor Assessment, Oral Grade
  • Year groups 11-12/13: Written Exam, Other Participation (upper secondary assessment)
Note

Ensure that at least one grade area is defined for each year group so that teachers can record grades.
