Manage Grade Areas
Introduction
Grade areas define the categories in which grades are recorded. Each grade area has a weighting that is factored into the calculation of the overall grade. Typical grade areas are:
- Major Assessment (e.g., written exams, tests) - higher weighting
- Minor Assessment (e.g., pop quizzes, short tests) - lower weighting
- Oral Grade - class participation
Overview
The overview displays all existing grade areas in a table with the following information:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| ID | Unique identifier of the grade area |
| Name | Name of the area (e.g., "Major Assessment") |
| Year Groups | Which year groups the area applies to |
| Weighting | Weighting factor for grade calculation |
| Edit | Link to edit the area |
| Delete | Link to delete the area |
Create Grade Area

Understanding Weighting
The weighting determines how much grades from this area contribute to the overall grade.
Example:
| Grade Area | Weighting | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Major Assessment | 2.0 | 2 |
| Minor Assessment | 1.0 | 3 |
Calculation:
- Major Assessment: 2 × 2.0 = 4.0
- Minor Assessment: 3 × 1.0 = 3.0
- Total Weighting: 2.0 + 1.0 = 3.0
- Average: (4.0 + 3.0) / 3.0 = 2.33
Recommended Configuration
For a typical school, we recommend the following grade areas:
| Name | Weighting | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Major Assessment | 2.00 | Written exams, tests, major assignments |
| Minor Assessment | 1.00 | Pop quizzes, short tests, homework |
| Oral Grade | 1.00 | Participation, oral examinations |
| Practical Grade | 1.00 | Practical work (e.g., in PE, Art, Music) |
Weighting may vary by federal state, school type, and subject. Please check the applicable regulations of your federal state.
Grade Areas per Year Group
You can flexibly assign grade areas to different year groups. This allows you to define different assessment schemes for different class levels.
Example:
- Year groups 5-10: Major Assessment, Minor Assessment, Oral Grade
- Year groups 11-12/13: Written Exam, Other Participation (upper secondary assessment)
Ensure that at least one grade area is defined for each year group so that teachers can record grades.
